VBT-Bottom Classifier
Software for Bottom Classification and Sediment Analysis
This application software utilizes unique template databases to store verified data for
future use. Information contained in the stored data files can be displayed without
special equipment or additional software. Analysis using VBT-Seabed Classifier gives
depth, seabed class, sediment and aquatic macrophyte data. Signals can be automatically
geo-referenced with GPS data for output to GIS applications for production thematic map
layers.
By correlating data from a reference set of bottom samples - and without special equipment
or additional software - BioSonics' VBT-Seabed Classifier decodes information about
depth, seabed class and sediments embodied in digitized echo envelopes from stored data
files.
Flexibility for a Variety of Applications
The VBT-Seabed Classifier is designed for use with BioSonics DT-X Series Echosounders.
The output files of the VBT-Seabed Classifier are produced in ASCII format in
geographical context (Latitude and Longitude). The VBT-Seabed Classifier can also be
run concurrently with navigation software or with GIS applications to produce thematic
charts of bathymetry and seabed classification.
Database Templates for Accurate Seabed Classifying
The VBT-Seabed Classifier utilizes a unique method of collecting data in a template
database, implementing the following classification methods through classic echo
integration without attenuation:
- B2 - First/Second Bottom Ratio
- B3 - First Echo Division
- B4 - Fractal Dimension
Additionally, in the S mode, sediment is visualized by implementing echo integration with
attenuation. This mode may be used to estimate the density of aquatic plants or bottom
fish which usually attenuate echo signals.
