Title Assessment of Pelagic Fish Species off Terengganu Waters using a Split Beam Echo Sounder
Author Khalid Samo, Mohd Azmi Ambak, and Musse Gabobe Hassan
Date Sep-27-2002
Description A trial acoustic survey using a split beam echo sounder- BioSonic DT6000 system was carried out in the waters off Terengganu between July and August 1997 to study the distribution and abundance of pelagic stock. Single fish echoes and back scattering data collected along the 6 parallel transects of 6.5 km in length were analysed for in situ target strength (TS) and fish population estimate. The average in situ target strength of -44.3 dB compared well with the average target strength of Rastrelliger kanagurta, Atule mate and Thunnus tonggol determined earlier under laboratory conditions. The total fish abundance in the area was estimated to be 5786.6 kg with an average of 96.5 kg./km.
