| Description | The river Asón estuary near Santoña in the autonomous community of Cantabria, Atlantic coast of northern Spain, with a surface of roughly 4sqkm, is a Natural Reserve under the authority of the National Park Administration. The area is characterised through tides with differences in water level of up to 4.5m, causing currents with changing direction. There are two commercial fishing ports and two leisure ports within the natural reserve. Boat traffic and restricted leisure activities as fishing and water bikes, are causing a constant impact on the area, as does the influx of untreated sewage in several locations. The bottom is mainly sandy to muddy, partially there is also found gravel. There are several natural channels, the main channel being dredged occasionally to allow fishing vessels safe access to their harbours. The objective of the case study presented here was to determine the coverage with submerged aquatic vegetation, abundant in the river Asón estuary and specifically, to evaluate the distribution and abundance of two seagrass species: Zostera marina L. and Zostera noltii Hornem. . The results will contribute to the development of a thematic map of the Natural Reserve. |
