February 27, 2008 |
Welcome to the Winter 2008 issue of Soundings, the BioSonics Newsletter. This marks 30 years that BioSonics has provided hydroacoustic solutions for underwater assessment and monitoring of both fresh and marine environments. We are excited about the increased acceptance of hydroacoustic tools and the role that we have been able to play in this expansion. We rely on scientists and resource professionals for input and suggestions as well as for demonstration of the utility and reliability of hydroacoustic applications. To that end, in 2008, BioSonics will be reaching out to more of you than ever before, seeking your input and to better understand your requirements for aquatic and marine assessment and monitoring.
Please plan to visit with us when we are at the many conferences and meetings throughout the year, or join us for one of our Hydroacoustic Assessment Workshops. Whether you are exploring the depths of Crater Lake, Oregon, conducting stock assessment in the Georges Banks, studying fish distribution in African lakes, squid biomass estimates in the Pacific, or the impacts of hydrokinetic power projects, BioSonics stands ready to work with you and to implement hydroacoustic solutions to your needs.
We look forward to working with you for the next 30 years!

Manitoba Hydro's Missi Falls Project in Northern Manitoba, Canada |
February 27, 2008 |
Automated fish monitoring at a remote Canadian Hydro Facility. Manitoba Hydro needed a solution to remotely, autonomously, and continuously monitor whitefish distribution, abundance and passage at the Control Dam at Missi Falls on the Churchill River channel in Manitoba, Canada. The purpose of the study was to estimate fish escapement, particularly lake whitefish, through the flow control structure. Access to this site was by floatplane and Mike Burger (Senior Scientist, BioSonics) worked with Manitoba Hydro staff to design and implement the automated, remote-site acoustic monitoring portion of the project. Mike provided expertise for installation, setup, and analysis of data from an autonomous DT-X system for data collection.

Deep-water algae from Crater Lake, Oregon |
February 27, 2008 |
Working with the US National Park Service, BioSonics used the DT-X for collection of acoustic information on unique moss that grows in Crater Lake, Oregon. Growing well beyond 100 meters, the moss extends far below the normal depth that one might expect to find such lush growth (and associated photosynthesis). Because of the extreme clarity of the water in Crater Lake, the photosynthetic zone extends further than that of most other lakes in the world. The Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) used by the Park Service to get up close with the video also carried a BioSonics transducer connected to a DT-X Echosounder Surface Unit. The acoustic data aided in detecting the moss and algae from a distance and allowed the ROV to focus on the algae. Also participating in this project are Oregon State University, U.S. Geological Society and Southern Oregon University.

Online Forum and Discussion Board for Hydroacoustics Users
During the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference (including the American Fisheries Society) in December 2007, Angie Grier of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources spearheaded an initial meeting of freshwater hydroacoustics users to discuss a new medium for sharing hydroacoustic knowledge and usage. The result of this meeting was the creation of an exciting new online forum and discussion board, which will serve as an interactive resource available to all hydroacoustic professionals, students, and managers in the Midwest United States and beyond! "This forum is aimed at all levels of expertise and experience - a place for experts to share their knowledge, and for new users to ask questions, share problems, and join the larger community of hydroacoustics users." - Dr. Mark Jakubauskas, Kansas Biological Survey
Angie and Mark invite you to log in, discuss and share your own applications, experiences, tips, questions and feedback with other hydroacoustic users in the U.S., Canada, and around the world!

Analyzing Macrophytes and Substrate, Using Hydroacoustics |
February 27, 2008 |
Dr. Jarek Tegowski has been advancing the analysis and classification of both macrophytes and substrate, using hydroacoustic tools. He and his colleagues presented some of their results at the NySMAC Seminar in Spitsbergen, Norway in Fall 2007. Dr. Tegowski is working with a pre-release version of BioSonics Visual Bottom Typer (VBT) as well as his own MatlabŪ tools for these analyses. There are more scientists relying on hydroacoustic data for habitat mapping and this is a wonderful example of the kind of work that can be achieved. Major advantages of using hydroacoustics include the ability to cover large areas quickly and to sample in hostile environments that are either inaccessible or impractical using other methods. The preliminary report is available for viewing: Estimation of macrophytes using underwater acoustics for the evaluation of fjord environmental state (Kongsfjord, West Svalbard Island) Authors: Dr. Jaroslaw Tegowski, Philippe Blondel, Jozef Wiktor, Aleksandra Kruss, Agnieszka Tatarek

BioSonics Hydroacoustic Workshop: January and February 2008 |
February 27, 2008 |
BioSonics traditionally conducts workshops in January and October each year. The demand for our January 2008 workshop was overwhelming, so we added a workshop in February. Both the January and February workshops were full to capacity, and each was a big success!

The January workshop was attended by (photo above, left to right): John Stephenson and Brett Pflugrath (Battelle Pacific Northwest Labs), Angela Holzapfel and Kent Kristensen (Golder Associates), Stephen Chong (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources), Rob Stack (Golder Associates), Aaron Schweitzer (Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada), Stan Bosarge (Dauphin Island Sea Lab), Joseph Allen (University of Manitoba), Kari Jacobson Hedin (Fond du Lac Reservation), and Eric Munday (BioSonics).

The February workshop was attended by (photo above, left to right): Jan Linquist (N.A.R. Environmental Consultants Inc.), Kevin Poole (SUNY Cobleskill), Mark Cornwell (SUNY Cobleskill), Denis Gascon (Global Surveying Services), Matt Albright (SUNY Cooperstown, Biological Field Station), David Halstead (Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology), Michael Anderson (University of California, Riverside), Brian Mercer (Mercer and Associates Ltd.), Mark Jowett (APEM Ltd.), Holly Waterfield (SUNY Cooperstown, Biological Field Station).
The next BioSonics Hydroacoustics Workshop is scheduled for October 20-23, 2008. We hope you will join us!
