EcoSAV-   Submerged Plant Detection and Assessment

EcoSAV is another of BioSonics innovative solutions to habitat assessment. EcoSAV is the only commercially available hydroacoustic processing package specifically for submerged aquatic vegetation assessment. EcoSAV is based on a patented processing technique known “SAVEWS” (Submersed Aquatic Vegetation Early Warning System), developed by a team under the direction of Bruce Sabol, US Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station. BioSonics developed EcoSAV under a cooperative research and development agreement between the USACOE and BioSonics.

The echosounder system collects and saves to disk both the digital echo signal from DT-X series echosounders and DGPS data, including latitude, longitude and time. EcoSAV is used to process the digital echo signal to extract data regarding submerged aquatic vegetation. The processing algorithms in EcoSAV determine bottom depth, plant presence/absence, plant height and areal coverage. Plant data are geo-referenced and output in a format compatible with most commercially available mapping and GIS software.

EcoSAV software utilizes heuristic algorithms that have been extensively field tested and validated for detection and discrimination between species of submerged plants using the BioSonics DT-X echosounders. The standard EcoSAV settings combine the detections of plant coverage from a set number of echo returns. The algorithm contains the echo characteristics, which must be met for a signal to be accepted and processed. The results of the series of echos from the report cycle, are then reported as a percent coverage. Other data recorded includes the canopy height and the bottom depth.
